Trench warfare meets top-down action in Battalion Commander 1917, a WWI-themed runner where you push deep into enemy lines with a growing squad behind you. The premise is straightforward — reach the enemy war machine and destroy it — but getting there is anything but simple.

Scattered across the battlefield are captured soldiers waiting to be freed. Rescue them and they join your formation, turning a solo charge into something resembling an actual battalion. Enemies come in waves, obstacles multiply, and the battlefield grows more punishing the further you push. Gold dropped by fallen enemies funds upgrades between runs — better firepower, tougher units, heavier equipment.

There's a satisfying rhythm to the progression. Each run feels slightly different depending on who you rescue and what you've upgraded. Losses sting, but they rarely feel unfair. For a browser game, it holds up surprisingly well as a quick but replayable wartime experience.
