Encounters with enemy groups come down to sheer numbers. Crash into a larger force without enough backup and your army shrinks fast. Crash into a smaller one and you absorb them, swelling your ranks further. Gates along the route multiply or reduce your count, so choosing which ones to run through actually matters.
