Street Fighter 2
Few games have hit as hard — culturally and literally — as Street Fighter 2. The crunch of a well-timed shoryuken, the tension of a close health bar, the satisfaction of reading your opponent's pattern and punishing it perfectly. This is the game that defined what fighting games could be.
Ryu, Chun-Li, Blanka, Guile — each fighter carries a completely different rhythm. Learning one character deeply feels like a separate game altogether. The gap between button-mashing and genuine execution is wide, and crossing it takes real repetition.
What still holds up decades later is how readable the combat feels. Everything telegraphs. Mistakes are yours to own. There's no randomness to hide behind, just reflexes, spacing, and timing. That purity is exactly why tournaments still run it and why picking it up today feels no different than it did in an arcade in 1992.
