Depending on the mode, you're either tucking yourself behind furniture and holding your breath, or prowling the map as something that shouldn't be there. The butcher mode shifts the dynamic considerably, turning one player into a relentless pursuer while everyone else scrambles for cover. Hiding stops being passive when you can hear footsteps getting closer.

What makes it stick is the atmosphere. Dim lighting, ambient sound design, and the kind of map layouts that always seem to have one too many corners — it all adds up. There's a particular tension in watching a doorway, unsure whether to move or stay completely still.

Both solo and group play are supported, and the experience changes noticeably depending on how many people are involved. With friends, paranoia becomes a shared joke. Alone, it's something else entirely.
